Press release issued by Franklin Furnace announcing the opening of the seminal bookstore for artists' books. Possibly the earliest document issued by the important bookstore turned gallery.

[Artists produce books--engaging, bizarre, thoughtful, amusing, philosophical books--but who ever sees them? On Saturday, April 3rd, the need for a distribution center for book-like artworks will be filled. The Franklin Furnace Bookstore at 112 Franklin Street in lower Manhattan will provide book distribution by mail and offer books for sale through the store, exhibit one-of-a-kind books by artists, and maintain an archive of artists' books for the benefit of the public.]

[An independent group called Printed Matters, composed of Edit Deak, Sol LeWitt, Lucy Lippard, Miko Robinson, Pat Steir, Irena von Zahn and Robin White, is collaborating with Franklin Furnace to encourage artists to submit books for distribution, while gathering resources to publish artists' books that would not otherwise reach the public.]

Franklin Furnace, launched in 1976 by Martha Wilson in NYC, initially functioned as a storefront for artists' books. Its establishment provided a dedicated venue for the display, sale, and archiving of these art objects. The institution played a crucial role in legitimizing artists' books as a distinct art form and expanding the audience for them.

Good overall; toning to edges; tape residue to top center edge.
