Collaged by Lawrence Weiner and faxed to Michael Shamberg in reference to their ongoing correspondence about an ultimately unrealized film project entitled 'I Always Wanted to Wear White.'
The project is cited twice on Turtle: An Anarchic Salon, Shamberg's former blog. From 2004: [On the train here yesterday I began to write lyrics for "I always wanted to wear white," the title of a yet made film work by Lawrence Weiner and myself. Since voice is part of my training in recovery, and I am enjoying singing the arietta "Caro Mio Ben," why not write something which I could sing as a character?! Thinking Gilbert & Sullivan...], and 2007: [I am thinking of Lawrence Weiner who has a retrospective opening at the Whitney Museum in New York this week. I am so happy for him. I am also so sad not to be there. It hurts to know even if I were in NY I could not share the dinners and hardly the opening. We had many good such times since we met in 1975 and have worked together since. He has been the foundation of turtle and of my life in many ways. It is hard to write more. At least I will see the show soon! We did meet in London. When I was in hospital Gina Birch picked me up and took me to his opening there, and we met a couple of more times. I ALWAYS WANTED TO WEAR WHITE is the title to the video we have been planning for more than ten years. I hope we can make it. I still wear white!]
Provenance: Estate of Michael Shamberg; Private Collection, New York
Michael Shamberg (1952–2014) was a visionary filmmaker and producer who served as a vital "human link" between the worlds of contemporary art, independent music, and avant-garde cinema. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and working at The Kitchen in the mid-1970s, he became the definitive bridge between New York's downtown scene and Manchester’s Factory Records as the label’s U.S. head and New Order’s creative director. In this role, he orchestrated landmark collaborations between the band and art-world icons such as John Baldessari, Barbara Kruger, and Lawrence Weiner, while producing influential videos for musicians like Patti Smith and R.E.M. His career culminated in the critically acclaimed feature Souvenir (1999) and the founding of the "Turtle" salons—an international series of anarchic creative networks emphasizing radical generosity and cross-disciplinary exchange.
